Dear Autopay,

How to stop cash advance apps from auto-debiting your bank

Cash advance app keeps taking money from your account? You can revoke the app's permission to auto-debit you and have your bank block it. Here's how, in plain steps.

Steps

  1. Find which apps are debiting you. Look at your bank statement for names like MONEYLION, BRIGIT, or EARNIN.
  2. Send each app a revocation letter. Tell the app in writing you revoke your authorization for automatic debits from your account.
  3. Tell your bank. Ask your bank to stop payment and block future debits from those companies, at least 3 business days before the next debit. If you call, follow up in writing within 14 days.
  4. Keep proof and watch your statement. Save copies and dates. If a debit posts after you revoked, contact your bank promptly.

Heads up: this is meant for cash-advance apps. Stopping payments on a loan (payday loan, installment loan) can mean default, fees, or collections.

How do I stop a cash advance app from taking money?

Tell the app in writing that you revoke your authorization for automatic debits, and tell your bank to stop payment and block future debits from that company. Do it at least 3 business days before the next debit.

My cash advance app keeps taking money after I asked it to stop. What now?

Contact your bank right away. Once your bank knows you revoked the authorization, it must block future debits from that company. For ACH debits made after you revoked, your bank can return them within 60 days of the statement.

Do I have to repay a cash advance?

The apps we list say in their own terms you're not legally required to repay advances, and most say they won't send you to collections. Read each app's terms; the only thing our letters do is stop the auto-debits.

Does this work for payday or installment loans?

This guide is meant for cash-advance apps. Stopping payments on a loan (payday loan, installment loan) can mean default, fees, or collections.

Is this legal?

Federal rules generally let you revoke authorization for automatic debits from your account. This isn't legal advice.

Self-help fill-in letters, not legal advice, and not debt relief or credit repair. The only thing these letters do is ask to stop the auto-debits. Results aren't guaranteed.
